You can leave messages below about Stuart. It is hoped to be able to send these to the family in due course.
As a founder member I had contact with Stuart from around 2000. I can remember the certainty with which he outlined his vision and I was not surprised when he succeeded in realising that vision with the support of Ken Goward. I remember Peter Hingley, (a man who could clearly see the difficulties of founding a new society with the BAS Historic Section already in the field), doubting that he would succeed. I am so grateful for all the efforts he made to give us the fine society that we have today. My condolences to his family and friends.
Stuart invited me to attend the early pre-SHA meetings at Soho House prior to its official founding in 2002. He was confident that a new historical society could be beneficial to UK astronomy, an aspect up til then neglected by the RAS. Indeed, when word got to the RAS in 2002 they wanted to take the project onboard as their own. Stuart was adamant that SHA should be independent, for which all founding members of SHA will forever be appreciative. I am proud to have been involved with SHA since its inception and regard Stuart and Allan Chapman as the leading lights in what has proved to be a very successful organisation.
Very sad to hear this news. Stuart was most helpful when I took over as webmaster about three years ago by offering training and ongoing advice and help at what was a stressful time for himself in several ways. The SHA has become a recognised organisation for the quality of its work, and it is due to his foresight, together with others, that this has happened. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
Stuart made me feel very welcome as a new SHA member many years ago. Such a sad loss to the world of historical astronomy. Sincere condolences to all his family. RIP Stuart
Stuart made me most welcome at the first meeting of SHA back in the summer of 2002. We all valued his help and friendship. He was a corner stone in the formation of the society. His legacy is the successful society we know today. My condolences to his Family and many friends. RIP Stuart. Gerard Gilligan SHA chairman.
